Sir Philip was born in Of Powderham, Devonshire, England.1   Sir Philip's father was Sir John Courtenay and his mother was Joan Champernowne.  His paternal grandparents were Philip De Courtenay and Anne Wake; his maternal grandparents were Alexander Champernowne and Joan De Ferrers. He had a brother named Sir Humphrey. He had a half-brother named James.  He died on December 16th, 1463 in Powderham Castle, St Thomas, Devonshire, England.  He was buried in Powderham, Devonshire, England.1 1
