Joan was born in 1411 in Haccombe, Devon.1   Joan's father was Sir Hugh of Haccombe Courtenay and her mother was Phillipa Archdekne.  Her paternal grandparents were Sir Edward Courtenay and Emeline Dauney; her maternal grandparents were Sir Warin L'Arcdekne and Elizabeth Talbot. She had a sister named Alianor.  She was the younger of the two children. She had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Sir Edward, Sir Hugh of Boconnoc and Margaret.


Joan's first family with Sir Nicholas Baron Carew

They had five sons and three daughters, named Sir Thomas, Sir Nicholas of Haccombe, Hugh, Alexander of Antony, Sir William, Elizabeth, Florence and Jane.


Joan's second family with Sir Robert De Vere

They had a son named John.
