Edwin was born November 1826 at Sand Beds, the son of Jane Smith. The father isnt named, but is may be John Smith or maybe Benjamin Seed who Jane later married. Edwin didnt live with his mother, but instead trained as a Butcher near Leeds, so may have been adopted.
In 1841, Edwin (aged 14) was a Butcher's apprentice in West Leeds. There were also John and Jane Smith (both 15), Elizabeth (6) and Helen (3). His mother (Jane Seed) was in Sand Beds with William, Henry and Jane Smith.
On 24 Dec 1849, Edwin married Elizabeth Binns, the daughter of Thomas Binns of Holbeck (near Leeds), a Manufacturer. Edwin was 23 and a Butcher at Manchester. He recorded his father as "John Smith" (which is probably an invention).
In 1851 Edwin and Elizabeth (24 & 29) were at 63 Bradford Street, Manchester (Ancoats). Edwin was a Butcher & ????.
In 1861, Edwin (34) and Elizabeth (32) was a Butcher in Manchester. He had his nephew William Ratcliffe working with him as an assistant.
