General Notes
Jeremiah married as his first wife Mary Stockton of Guisbrough and from them descended John Atkinson Grimshaw, the Leeds painter whose work is now very much sought after. From the painter’s brother there are now numerous descendants in Australia.
In July or August 1682 Jeremiah Grimshaw had been accused of speaking or preaching in conventicles, and when he refused to swear the Oath of Allegiance he was committed to prison in York Castle until April 1683. He spent a further six months imprisoned in Scarborough Castle in 1684
In 1710 John Grimshaw of Yeadon and Jeremy Grimshaw of Guiseley, along with several other Quakers were prosecuted in the exchequer for Tithes, at the suite of William Wilson, Rector of Guiseley.
