Sarah's father was Abraham Grimshaw and her mother was Sarah Collier.  Her paternal grandparents were Edward Grimshaw and Dorytye (Dorothe) Ranger. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Jeremiah, Abraham, Josiah, John, Mary and Rebecca.  She was the third oldest of the seven children.
