Clara's father was William Nelson and her mother was Clara Ann Mather. Her maternal grandparents were George Mather and Mary Marsh. She had a brother and five sisters, named James, Emily, Lizzie, Annie, Ettie and Adeline. She was the fifth oldest of the seven children.
