Mary was born in March 1844 in Sharples.¹

  Richard and Elizabeth's other daughters (before and after) were born in Sharples, so its liklely Mary was too, but birth registered in Western Bolton.

Mary's father was Richard Mather and her mother was Elizabeth Roper. Her paternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Hannah Knowles. She had two brothers and four sisters, named John, William, Hannah, Martha, Alice and Ellen. She had an adopted brother and an adopted sister, named Robert and Ann. She had three half-sisters named Elizabeth, Elizabeth and Sarah.
