James was born in October 1832 in Sharples and his christening took place on January 27th, 1833 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  James' father was William Mather and his mother was Sarah Bayley.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Alice Mather; his maternal grandparents were John Bayley and <unknown>. He had a brother named George.  He was the older of the two children. He had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named John, Ann, Alice and Betty.  He died at 6 months old in April 1833 in Sharples.  He was buried on April 12th, 1833 at St. Peter's (Bolton).2
