Thomas' father was William Clarkson and his mother was Sarah Collings. His paternal grandparents were Richard Clarkson and Mary Rainford; his maternal grandparents were William Collings and Maria Mather. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Peter, Richard, Adam, Maria, Sarah and Mary. He was the fifth oldest of the seven children.
