John was born in 1801 in Malpas and his baptism took place on August 16th, 1801 at All Saints, Harthill.1 2  John's father was William Brereton Jnr and his mother was Mary Tomlinson.  His paternal grandparents were William Brereton and Mary Ledsham; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Tomlinson and Phoebe Owens. He had three brothers named Thomas, William and George. He had an adopted sister named Phoebe. He had a half-brother named Samuel.  He died at the age of 69 on September 25th, 1870 in Broxton.  He was buried on September 30th, 1870 at All Saints, Harthill.3 3
