Samuel was 3 months old in 1 April 1841, so born about Dec 1840 (or early Jan 1941). There are no Cheshire birth records that match. The closest UK (1840-41) match is Samuel Brereton born Q2/1841, Stoke-on-Trent, but that birth is still too late.
Samuel must have been illegitimate (or adopted) and recorded under his mother's name.
Deaths Jun 1885 (>99%) Brereton Samuel 44 Northwich 8a 191
Probate: BRERETON Samuel 25 August Administration of the personal effects of Samuel Brereton late of Manor Farm Swanlow-lane Over in the county of Chester Manager of Co-operative Stores and Farmer who died 30 Apr 1885 at Manor Farm who granted at the Principal Registry to Ellen Brereton of Manor Farm Widow of the Relict.
General Notes
If Samuel was William's son then his father was 65 when he was concieved. However, Samuel is probably an illegitimate grandson as there is no Samule Brereton birth recorded.
In 1841, Samuel, aged 3 months, is listed under Wiliam Brereton Jnr. It is therefore likely he is an illegitimate son of William Jnr before William married Mary Bate.
in 1851, Samule, aged 10, is at Woodend Farm and described as the son of William and Hannah (75 & 49), so it is possible he is their son (but listed out of order in 1841), but more likely an adopted grandson. Hannah died in August.
In 1861, Samule (20), now a draper, is still living with his "father" William Brereton (86) at 100 acre Woodend Farm. His brother Thomas and extended family were living with them, and probably running the farrm.
