John was born in June 1837 in Harthill and his baptism took place on June 27th, 1841 in Tattenhall.1 2  John's father was John Brereton and his mother was Elizabeth Boote.  His paternal grandparents were William Brereton Jnr and Mary Tomlinson; his maternal grandparents were William Boot and Ann Hares. He had four brothers and four sisters, named William, John, Thomas, George, Mary, William, Elizabeth and Ann.  He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 57 on March 22nd, 1895 in Chowley.  He was buried on March 25th, 1895 at All Saints, Harthill.3 3
