Thomas was born in October 1838 in Tattenhall and his christening took place there on November 18th, 1838.1 2  Thomas' father was John Brereton and his mother was Elizabeth Boote.  His paternal grandparents were William Brereton Jnr and Mary Tomlinson; his maternal grandparents were William Boot and Ann Hares. He had four brothers and four sisters, named William, John, John, George, Mary, William, Elizabeth and Ann.  He was the fifth oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 76 on April 24th, 1915 in Cheshire.3
