His paternal grandparents were John II+ Beals and Sarah+ Bowater; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Cook and Mary+ Underwood. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, Jacob+, Nathan, Ann, Ruth, Phebe, Mary and Sarah Charity. He was the fifth oldest of the nine children.
