Gilbert was born on September 2nd, 1243 in Christchurch, Hampshire, England.  Gilbert's father was Earl Richard de Clare IV of Gloucester and his mother was Maud de Lacy.  His paternal grandparents were Earl Gilbert de Clare III of Gloucester & Hertford and Lady Isabella Marshall; his maternal grandfather was Earl John de Lacy of Lincoln and his maternal grandmother is Margaret de Quincy. He had a brother and a sister, named Thomas and Roese.  He died at the age of 52 on December 7th, 1295 in Monmouth Castle, Monmouthshire, England.  He was buried on December 22nd, 1295 in Abbey, Tewksbury, Gloucestershire, England.
