Joan was born about 1398 in of Westminster,Middlesex,England.  Joan's father was John (1st Earl of Somerset) Beaufort and her mother was Margaret (of Kent) Holland.  Her paternal grandparents were John "Of Gaunt" of England Duke of Lancaster and Catherine de Roet Duchess of Lancaster; her maternal grandparents were Thomas II d'Holland Earl of Kent and Lady Alice FitzAlan of Arundel. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Henry (2nd Earl of Somerset), John (1st Duke of Somerset), Thomas (Earl of Perche), Edmund (2nd Duke of Somerset), Joan (of Somerset) and Margaret (of Somerset).  She died on July 15th, 1445 in Dunbar Castle,East Lothian,Scotland.  She was buried on November 22nd, 1445 in Charterhouse,Perth,Perthshire,Scotland.

‌Joan and James (Sir) (Black Knight of Lorn) were married in a religious ceremony before September 21st, 1439 in <Balveny,Fifeshire,Scotland>.  They had three sons named John of Atholl, James (1st Earl of Buchan) and Andrew.

‌Joan and James I King were married in a religious ceremony in St. Mary,Overy,Southwark,Surrey.  They had two sons and seven daughters, named Alexander, James II (the Fiery Face) King of, Margaret Stewart of, Isabella Elizabeth, Joan Janet, Mary, Annabella, Eleanor and Isabel (Princess).
