John of Atholl was born about 1440 in Balveny,Fifeshire,Scotland.  John of Atholl's father was James (Sir) (Black Knight of Lorn) Stewart and his mother was Joan de Beaufort Queen of Scotland.  His paternal grandparents were John (Sir) (of Ardgowan) Stewart and Isabel Ergadia; his maternal grandparents were John (1st Earl of Somerset) Beaufort and Margaret (of Kent) Holland. He had two brothers named James (1st Earl of Buchan) and Andrew. He had two half-brothers and seven half-sisters, named Alexander, James II (the Fiery Face) King of, Margaret Stewart of, Isabella Elizabeth, Joan Janet, Mary, Annabella, Eleanor and Isabel (Princess).  He died on September 15th, 1512 in Laighwood,Perthshire,Scotland.  He was buried in Cathedral,Dunkeld,Perthshire,Scotland.
