Mary Ann was born on March 29th, 1835 in Talledega Co.,AL.1 Mary Ann's father was Willis Jordan Bass and her mother was Elizabeth Lillian (Betsy) Hardin. Her paternal grandparents were Jordan Bass and Bathenia Gay. She had six brothers and five sisters, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named Tillman, John W., George H., Jourdan G., Calloway Calvin, Nicholas Judson, Nancy E., Sarah F., Martha J., Elizabeth W., Dicey and Parmecy. She was the third oldest of the thirteen children. She had two half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Johnnie C., Elijah, Ella, Ida and Dora.
