Lord Gilbert was born on September 2nd, 1243 in Christchurch, Hampshire, England.  Lord Gilbert's father was Richard De Clare and his mother was Maud de Lacy.  His paternal grandparents were Gilbert de Clare and Isabella (Marshall) Mareschal; his maternal grandparents were John de Lacy and Margaret de Quincey. He had three brothers and six sisters, named Thomas, Bevis Benet, Robert, Isabel, Margaret, Rohesia Agnes, Maud, Eglantine and Eleanor.  He was the second oldest of the ten children.  He died at the age of 52 on December 7th, 1295.


Lord Gilbert's first family with Joan Plantagenet

‌Lord Gilbert and Joan were married in a religious ceremony in April 1290 in Westminster Abbey, Middlesex, England.  They had a son and three daughters, named Gilbert, Lady Margaret, Alianor (Eleanor) and Elizabeth.
