Alice was born about 1144 in Rycott, Oxfordshire, England.  Alice's father was Geoffrey De Mandeville and her mother was Rohese De Vere.  Her paternal grandparents were William de Mandeville and Margaret de Rie; her maternal grandparents were Alberic II de Vere and Adeliza de Clare. She had four brothers and a sister, named Ernulph, William, Robert, Geoffrey II and Maud.  She was the youngest of the six children. She had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named Simon, Beatrice, Andeline and Alice.

‌Alice and John FitzRichard Clavering were married in a religious ceremony about 1169 in Essex, England.  They had three sons and a daughter, named Henry Leigh, Roger, Sir Robert and Joanna.
