John's father was Andrew Johnston and his mother was Mary Bruce Turner. His paternal grandparents were John Johnston and Ann Hardie Dick; his maternal grandparents were John Turner and Janet Catherine Thomson. He had five brothers and three sisters, named William, Big Shirt, Dodd, Jim, Robert, Janet, Ann and Poll. He was the oldest of the nine children. He died due to a respiratory problem and/or pneumonia, pulmonary pthisis, duration 6 months, at the age of 39 on January 22nd, 1902 in Kirkliston. He was buried in Kirkliston.³⁴
