Douglas was born on June 23rd, 1723 in West Calder. Douglas' father was William Baxter and his mother was Janet Johnston.  His paternal grandparents were Baxter and Anna High; his maternal grandparents were Robert Johnson and <Unknown>. He had six brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, William, Robert, Andrew, James, William, Joanet, Elizabeth and Catherine.  He was the second youngest of the ten children.  He died after 1780.1
