James' father was William Baxter and his mother was Janet Johnston.  His paternal grandparents were Baxter and Anna High; his maternal grandparents were Robert Johnson and <Unknown>. He had six brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, William, Robert, Andrew, William, Douglas, Joanet, Elizabeth and Catherine.  He was the fourth youngest of the ten children.
