Big Shirt's father was Andrew Johnston and his mother was Mary Bruce Turner. His paternal grandparents were John Johnston and Ann Hardie Dick; his maternal grandparents were John Turner and Janet Catherine Thomson. He had five brothers and three sisters, named John, William, Dodd, Jim, Robert, Janet, Ann and Poll. He was the third oldest of the nine children. He died due to a respiratory problem and/or pneumonia, pulmonary tuberculosis, 2 months, at the age of 35 on December 10th, 1901 in Kirkliston. He was buried in Kirkliston.³⁴
