Ann's father was Andrew Johnston and her mother was Mary Bruce Turner. Her paternal grandparents were John Johnston and Ann Hardie Dick; her maternal grandparents were John Turner and Janet Catherine Thomson. She had six brothers and two sisters, named John, William, Big Shirt, Dodd, Jim, Robert, Janet and Poll. She was the third youngest of the nine children. She died due to a medical problem, upus of face, tubercular meningitis, 10 days, at the age of 43 on March 4th, 1921 in Kirkliston. She was buried in Kirkliston.³⁴
