Janet's father was Andrew Johnston and her mother was Mary Bruce Turner. Her paternal grandparents were John Johnston and Ann Hardie Dick; her maternal grandparents were John Turner and Janet Catherine Thomson. She had six brothers and two sisters, named John, William, Big Shirt, Dodd, Jim, Robert, Ann and Poll. She was the fifth oldest of the nine children. She died due to a medical problem, congestion of the lungs, at the age of 70 on June 10th, 1942 in Kirkliston. The funeral took place on June 12th, 1942 in Edinburgh. She was cremated on June 12th, 1942 in Edinburgh.³
