James was born on January 13th, 1814 in Kilsyth. James' father was Andrew Findlay and his mother was Isobel Shaw.  His paternal grandparents were William Finlay and Agnes Hanna; his maternal grandparents were Alexander Shaw and Jean Tennant. He had three brothers and four sisters, named William, John, Thomas, Isobel, Isabella, Agnes and Agnes.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.  He died due to a medical problem, Anasarea, accompanying disease of liver function, at the age of 43 on December 4th, 1857 in Kilsyth.  He was buried in Kilsyth.1 1
