Jean was born in January 1709 in Kilsyth and her baptism took place there on January 23rd, 1709. Jean's father was William Shaw and her mother was Jean Cleland.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Shaw and Agnes Andersone. She had four brothers and two sisters, named James, Robert, William, David, Christian and Agnes.  She was the second youngest of the seven children. She had a half-brother and a half-sister, named William and Jean.
