William's father was William Shaw and his mother was Christian Booth.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Shaw and Agnes Andersone. He had a sister named Jean.  He was the younger of the two children. He had four half-brothers and three half-sisters, named James, Robert, William, David, Christian, Jean and Agnes.
