Robert was born in January 1697 in Kilsyth and his baptism took place there on January 19th, 1697. Robert's father was William Shaw and his mother was Jean Cleland.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Shaw and Agnes Andersone. He had three brothers and three sisters, named James, William, David, Christian, Jean and Agnes.  He was the second oldest of the seven children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named William and Jean.
