Christian was born in May 1702 in Kilsyth and her baptism took place there on May 20th, 1702. Christian's father was John Kirkwood and her mother was Isabel Hendrie.  Her maternal grandparents were James Hendrie and Isabel Strathan. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, William, James, William, Isobel, Barbara and Margaret.  She was the third oldest of the eight children.
