Jean was born on July 7th, 1747 in Kilsyth and her baptism took place there on July 9th, 1747. Jean's father was James Tennant and her mother was Jean Shaw.  Her paternal grandparents were William Tennent and Helen Jervey; her maternal grandparents were William Shaw and Jean Cleland. She had a brother named William.  She was the younger of the two children.
