William was born in October 1744 in Kilsyth and his baptism took place there on October 21st, 1744. William's father was James Tennant and his mother was Jean Shaw.  His paternal grandparents were William Tennent and Helen Jervey; his maternal grandparents were William Shaw and Jean Cleland. He had a sister named Jean.  He was the older of the two children.
