Alexander's father was Robert Shaw and his mother was Christian Kirkwood.  His paternal grandparents were William Shaw and Jean Cleland; his maternal grandparents were John Kirkwood and Isabel Hendrie. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named John, William, Robert, David, James, Joseph, Thomas, Christian and Barbara.  He was the fifth youngest of the ten children.
