John was born in 1726 in Kilsyth. John's father was Robert Shaw and his mother was Christian Kirkwood.  His paternal grandparents were William Shaw and Jean Cleland; his maternal grandparents were John Kirkwood and Isabel Hendrie. He had seven brothers and two sisters, named William, Robert, David, Alexander, James, Joseph, Thomas, Christian and Barbara.  He was the oldest of the ten children.
