Mark was born in 1802 in Green Co.,Kentucky. Mark's father was Peter DeSpain and his mother was Nancy Skaggs. His paternal grandfather was John DeSpain and his paternal grandmother is Susan Scott; his maternal grandparents are Henry Skaggs and Mary Thompson. He had twelve brothers and four sisters, named John M., Hiram, William Marshall, Stephen, James Simpson, Harrison, Silas, William Joseph, George Washington, Andrew Drury, Thomas, Edmund, Susanna Elizabeth, Mary, Nancy and Lucy Ann. He is the seventh oldest of the seventeen children. He had a half-brother named William Perry.-
