His paternal grandfather was Richard Gatten and his paternal grandmother is Mary; his maternal grandfather was Joseph Murphey. He had nine brothers and five sisters, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named Thomas, Charles, John, William Jr., Isaac, Greenberry, Joseph, James, Jonathan, Elizabeth (Betsey), Rachel, Catherine (Katie), Jane, Sarah (Sallie) and UNKNOWN. He died at the age of 82 on September 19th, 1881 in West Liberty, Muscatine Co., Iowa. He was buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery, West Liberty, Muscatine Co., Iowa.-
