Charles was born in 1787 in Montgomery Co., Maryland. Charles' father was William Benjamin Gatten and his mother was Sarah Murphy. His paternal grandfather was Richard Gatten and his paternal grandmother is Mary; his maternal grandfather was Joseph Murphey. He had nine brothers and five sisters, and also a sibling of unknown gender, named Thomas, John, William Jr., Galentine, Isaac, Greenberry, Joseph, James, Jonathan, Elizabeth (Betsey), Rachel, Catherine (Katie), Jane, Sarah (Sallie) and UNKNOWN. He died at the age of 54 on February 23rd, 1841 in Goshen Township, Belmont Co., Ohio.-
