John Mather (71), Hairdresser was at 2 Simpson Street. Lives with: Living with her father James Brooks in 19939 Named After Lives with: In 1902-1903, Charles and George and their future wives were all living at 26 Dean Street at the time of their marriage. Relative of: Shared DNA match with JMG Relative of: Mike (telsono) and Leslie Correia have a shared DNA match with JMG 1800 - 1888 John Mather 88 88 In 1841, Joseph (63), Thomas (40) and John (38), all weavers were at Kay Street.  Also present (separate family were John Heaton (7) and Mary Mather (60).

In 1851, Thomas and John (52 & 50), both unmarried were living with their parents Joseph and Mary at 97 Kay Street, L.B.

From 1861 John (61) became a "Barber & Hair Cutter" or Hairdresser and moved up the road with his father (83 and a cotton weaver) from 97 to 204 Kay St.

In 1871, John (71, Unmarried) is a hairdresser at 2 Simpson Street, Little Bolton

In 1881, John (81, Widower) was a retired barber at 2 Simpson St.
1778 John Brooks 1787 Mary Kershaw 1854 - ~1856 James Brooks 2 2 There was no James with the family in the 1861 or 1871 census.  It is therefore assumed that James died as a child between 1854 and 1861 (there are 11 posible matches). 1851 - 1892 Alice Brooks 41 41 Alice was James and Alice's first daughter, and was named after her mother and grandmother.

Alice was with her parents at 1851 and 1861

Alice had left the family home and married by 1871 (aged 20).  She probably married 1868 or 1869 (several possible marriages in Bolton). Most likely is Alice A Brooks to Francis Smith in Q3/1869 (register office for non-conformists) but not Alice Brooks to William Bromley in Q1/1868 as she was 39 in 1881 so too old.

In 1871, Frank and Alice Smith (21 & 20) were at 6 Simpson Street, earlier home to our Mather Family.  John Mather (71 a haridresser was at no.2).
1856 - 1895 Robert Brooks 39 39 In 1861, Robert (aged 5) was at 94 Blackburn Road (East Side), Little Bolton with parents and family.

In 1871, Robert (15) was a wool washer, still at 94 Blackburn Road.

11 Nov 1877 Robert Brooks, labourer, son of James a quarryman married Betsy Halstead at Bolton St John, but had no children.

In 1881. Robert and Betsy were living in Bolton (but no Alice).

In 1891 they were still in Little Bolton and had no children.
1858 - 1911 Samuel Brooks 52 52 In 1881, Samuel (unmarried, 21, labourer) was living with Charles and Anna Brooks and family at 29 Major Street, Astley Brisge, Sharples

In 1892, Samuel and "Maggie" were at 11 Havarth Street.  In 1896, Samule and Margaret were at 22 Bolton Street (when Mary Alice was baptised). He was a labourer for both baptisms.

Samuel (single) was lodging with his older brother George and family in 1891 at 30 Howard Street, Little Bolton.

Samuel had lied about his age as 28 on his marriage certificate to Margaret.  They were both 5 years older!

Samuel was married (41, general labourer) in 1901. His son James (8) and dau Mary A (5) was with him, as well as his sister-in-law Betsy (widow, 44)
1844 George Brooks George was still living with parents James and Alice in 1871, but had married Elizabeth by 1881.  George had a daughter Ellen Hardy, aged 4 in 1881, so Elizabeth must have had an illegitimate child Ellen (as not married before).

In 1877, another George Brooks, son of Thomas married Ellen Halstead, daughter of James.

12 Oct 1879, George Brooks, aged 34, son of James married Elizabeth Hardy, daughter of Thomas at Bolton-le-Moors.  Elizabeth already had a daughter Alice that was baptised the daughter of James Hardy, so unlikely she was his.

In 1901, George, Elizabeth (56 & 58) and daughter Alice Brooks (24) had a lodger Mary Alice Hodgen (24) living with them.

1835 - 1907 John Brooks 72 72 John appears on 1851 census as a son of James.  James had been married before he was maried to Alice (and was a widower when he married Alice).  The only good match after that is the 1891 and 1901 census, where again, he is recorded as born in Turton.

Another John Brooks, an Iron Moulder, borm Manchester married Elizabeth abot 1859

John and Susannah "Brook" recorded in 1861 census, with the Bury family living with them.  Is this the right person?
1848 - 1896 Charles Brooks 48 48 Grandson of James, living with the family in 1851, but recorded as their son in 1861.

26 Nov 1871, Charles Brookes, son of James Brooks a Quarryman, married Ann Price, daughter of John Price at St, George, Bolton-le-Moors, Lancashire (the only sibling to marry here).

In 1881, Charles and Anne (33 & 29) were at 29 Major Street, Astley Bridge, Sharples and had Joseph (8), James (6), John (4), Charles (2) and George (5 mo).  They also had Samuel Brooks (21) with them, Charles' youngest brother.

About September 1889 wife Ann died, and in December Charles married Matilda Ainsworth and had 3 or 4 more children, but only Ernest (b.1896) survived.

In 1891, Charles and Matilda (49 & 33) were at 5 Lee Clough, Sharples with James (16), John (14), Charles (12), George (10), William (7), Robert (5) and baby Thomas (2 mo)

In 1892, Charles and Matilda had a son Samuel, who was the only son baptised, but Samuel died aged 2.  In 1894, they had Mary A Brooks, but she was missing thereafter, so possibly adopted out.

In 1896, Charles died, aged only 48.  Several of his sons had to raise themselves.

In 1901, Charles's second wife Matilda Brooks (43) was with her son Ernest Brooks (aged 4) and her sister Eliza Ainsworth (45)

Aftrer Charles had died, In 1902 and (when sons Charles and George married) the family, including both future wives were living at 26 Dean Street

In total, Charles had 9 children.  All sons and no daughters.  What is the odds of that !
1846 - 1919 Elizabeth Hardy 73 73 Not at all sure of Elizabeth's maiden name.  On her 12 Oct 1879 marriage certificate, her father was Thomas Hardy, so perhaps her daughter Ellen was illigimate.

Elizabeth Marsden was working as a servant in Blackburn in 1871.  Birth records do suggest that this may be her.
1876 Ellen Hardy Born Ellen Hardy in 1876 (the only Bolton birth with this name), the illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth Hardy and named Ellen Hardy, aged 4 in 1881.  Although illegitimate, she was baptised the daughter of James and Elizabeth Hardy, so unlikely to be the daughter of George.

In 1891, was aged 14 and named Ellen Brooks, living with George & Elizabeth.

In 1901, Ellen Brooks, 24 was a cotton tenter, still with her parents George and Elizabeth at 30 Howard Strreet, Little Bolton.
1872 Joseph Brooks Joseph was George's nephew, and was living with him in 1891

In 1881, Joseph, aged 8, son of Charles and Anne (or Ann) was deaf and dumb.  The family were at 29 Major Street, Astley Bridge.

Joseph was described as "a bit of a drifter" and did various jobs.  He trained as a clogger.  Was a crane operator at a large mill, and after WW1 a stoker on a ship, which came to the USA but he couldnt get off because of his hanycap.

Married Lucy (tbc), also deaf & dumb, sometime after 1900.  They had no children.
1852 - 1889 Ann Price 37 37 Ann Price's father was John Price

In 1881, Charles and Anne (33 & 29) were at 29 Major Street, Astley Bridge, Sharples and had Joseph (8), James (6), John (4), Charles (2) and George (5 mo).  They also had Samuel Brooks (21) with them, Charles' youngest brother.
1878 - 1954 Charles Brooks 76 76 In 1900, another Charles T Brooks marreid Elizabeth A Thornley at St Thomas, Halliwell.  This is another couple who had Mary L Brooks in 1901 and James A Brooks in 1903..

In 1901, James (26, Head) was at 9 Delemere Street, Halliwell with brothers John (24), Charles (22), George (20), William (17) and Robert S Brooks (15).

In 1902, Charles Brooks of 26 Dean Street married Nancy Thornley at St John's, Bolton and had Annie Brooks in 1903.

In 1950, Charles (60) was living with his daughter Allie and family at Clifton, Passaic, New Jersey, USA
1876 - 1955 John Brooks 79 79 In 1901, John was boarding with John and Sarah Collins at 9 Higson Street, Bolton.

In 1911, the three were still together.

Do not confuse with Betsy Halstead, daughter of William and Ann from Higher Booths, who married William Ashworth in 1879.

Although married, Betsy Brooks was living with her brothers Joseph and Thomas in 1881.  Robert did record her on the census at 2 Mulliner St, Little Bolton though, but she couldnt be in two places at one time!

Betsy was widowed in 1901, and living with Robert's brother Samuel and his family.  It's likely she remarried in 1902.
~1859 - ~1925 Margaret Hodgen 66 66 Margaret's father was William Hodgen, a slater.

Cant find her on 1891 census, even though she married in Bolton 9 months later.

1810 James Brooks Robert Brooks Ann or Alice ~1811 - 1875 James Brooks 64 64 In 1844, James was a Widower when he married Alice Mather.  Both were of fulll age.  The same year another James Brooks married Sarah Mather.

His first wife probably died about 1841, and after a suitable time found a new younger partner, Alice Mather.  She would have already been 6 or 7 months pregnant with George when they married on 6-Oct-1844.

Can't find him on 1841 census, so unable to match his first wife and family with son John (b.1835).

In 1849 James Brookes was a witness at the wedding between Samuel Mather (his brother-in-law, Ann's brother) and Ann Nightingdale.
