Thomas' father was Thomas Henry Wolfendale and his mother was Martha Mather. His maternal grandparents were John Mather and Martha Jordan. He had two brothers and four sisters, named William, Jack, Laura, Annie, Doris and Olive. He was the third youngest of the seven children.
