Alice's father was Samuel Mather and her mother was Martha Kay. Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Martha Jordan. She had two brothers and three sisters, named John, William, Ellen, Hannah and Martha. She was the fifth oldest of the six children. She died in March 1883 in Bolton.¹
