Thomas' father was John Mather and his mother was Martha Jordan. His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Wood. He had five brothers and six sisters, named James, Samuel, William, Robert, John, Mary, Betsy, Ellen, Hannah, Hannah and Martha. He was the eighth oldest of the twelve children. He died at the age of 39 on March 23rd, 1901 in Bolton.²
