Mary's father was Francis (Frank) Smith and her mother was Alice Brooks. Her maternal grandparents were James Brooks and Alice Mather. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Samuel, Francis, Edward, Margaret, Alice and Catherine. She was the oldest of the seven children. She died as an infant at 3 months old in April 1872 in Little Bolton. Her burial was on April 24th, 1872 at Tonge-with-Haulgh Cemetery.²¹
