Catherine's father was Francis (Frank) Smith and her mother was Alice Brooks. Her maternal grandparents were James Brooks and Alice Mather. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Samuel, Francis, Edward, Margaret, Mary and Alice. She was the youngest of the seven children.
