Thomas' father was Thomas Sherlock and his mother was Mary Ann Quigley. His paternal grandparents were Samuel Sherlock and Lydia Eddowes. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Richard, Joseph, Gerard, Bernard, Cicely, Dorothy and Lydia. He was the second oldest of the eight children.
