Dorothy's father was Thomas Sherlock and her mother was Mary Ann Quigley. Her paternal grandparents were Samuel Sherlock and Lydia Eddowes. She had five brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Richard, Joseph, Gerard, Bernard, Cicely and Lydia. She was the third oldest of the eight children.
