Gerard's father was Thomas Sherlock and his mother was Mary Ann Quigley. His paternal grandparents were Samuel Sherlock and Lydia Eddowes. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Richard, Joseph, Bernard, Cicely, Dorothy and Lydia. He was the seventh oldest of the eight children.
