Joseph's father was Thomas Sherlock and his mother was Mary Ann Quigley. His paternal grandparents were Samuel Sherlock and Lydia Eddowes. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Richard, Gerard, Bernard, Cicely, Dorothy and Lydia. He was the sixth oldest of the eight children. He died at the age of 78 in August 1985 in Birkenhead.²
