David's father was James Pendlebury and his mother was Eliza Mather. His maternal grandparents were Isaac Mather and Mary Fairhurst. He had four brothers named Albert, John, Israel and Fred. He was the fourth oldest of the five children. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Henry, James and Mary. He died at the age of 61 in February 1933 in Bolton. His burial was on February 18th, 1933 in Bolton.²³
