James' father was James Pendlebury and his mother was Hannah Yates. He had a brother and a sister, named Henry and Mary.  He was the youngest of the three children. He had five half-brothers named Albert, John, Israel, David and Fred.  He died at the age of 56 in March 1916 in Bolton.²
